We review a ton of Gibson Les Paul's on this site and I must say, the Les Paul Vintage Mahogany may be one of my more recent favorite Les Paul constructions in a long time.
Why might you ask? The good people over at Gibson have created a great number of vintage electrics lately, and the Mahogany Electric featured here is no different. Both the front and back of this guitar are hand-carved from solid mahogany. When I first picked up this instrument I did notice that the cost of this high end wood was weight- the guitar itself is on the heavier end. Hell, what Gibson isn't heavy? If you are detoured from a great Gibson based on weight you are probably a Fender Lover!
As for specs, this guitar features the newer Alnico V BurstBucker Pro humbuckers. Initially I felt that this was a strange choice by Gibson, fitting a Vintage Les Paul with the most cutting edge pickups they have (the Alnico V is the stock pickup on all new Standard Les Pauls). In reality, when playing this guitar it is easy to see that Gibson has ingenuously captured the best of the old and new. The look and warmth of the rich mahogany comes through in the tone while the Alnico V's carry strong warmth, cutting edge, and distinctive Gibson flavorings to any live performance or recording.
As for looks, my only disappointment was that this guitar is lacking the white binding details. I think Gibson did this for two reasons- first, to focus on the beautiful vintage wood tone and staining; secondly to keep the price down on this guitar. Retails for under $1000.00. Overall a fantastic investment.
